In
1989, the Placentia Presbyterian Church, utilizing an old farmhouse
next door, began the Homeless Intervention Shelter House known as H.I.S.
House. A volunteer committee and a part time resident manager ran the
shelter. A family with a newborn baby was among the first residents.
They had been living in a tent in Featherly Park.
In March of 2001, thanks to a HUD grant and many volunteers, H.I.S. House completed
its second renovation project expanding from 25 to 40 beds. H.I.S. House is one
of the only shelters in Orange County which invites single adults without children
to participate in their program as well as reunification of parents and their
children who have been in the foster care system.
The growth of the shelter also included an expansion of staff from three
to eight. Two full time positions; director and case manager, six part
time positions; a case manager, one live-in resident manager, two resident
managers,a childcare coordinator and an administrative assistant.
Approximately 140 people are served at H.I.S. House each year. The residents
continually experience wonderful success
stories.
